More than 200 years ago, a cryptologist sent an encoded message to Thomas Jefferson, in what he called a “nearly flawless cipher”. Dr. Lawren Smithline, a mathematician at the Center for Communications Research at Princeton, NJ, has now published a crack of the algorithm.

It seems that the coded text was the first few lines of the Declaration of Independence, of which Thomas Jefferson was an author.
